✈️ Domestic Flights: Getting to Jeju (and Beyond)

For most of Korea, KTX and buses cover ground faster than flying is worth the hassle. Jeju is the exception — no bridge, no tunnel, no train, just water. If Jeju is on your itinerary, a domestic flight is almost certainly how you’ll get there.

The Gimpo–Jeju Route

This is one of the busiest air routes in the world, and it feels like it — flights leave Gimpo Airport for Jeju every few minutes during peak hours, more like a shuttle than a typical flight schedule. The flight itself takes about an hour.

Airlines flying this route include Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, Jin Air, Eastar Jet, Air Busan, Air Seoul, and T’way — a mix of full-service carriers and budget airlines. With this much competition and frequency, fares are often genuinely cheap, especially booked a little in advance.

Booking

• Airline websites directly (Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, etc.) for the widest selection
• NOL (formerly Interpark Tour, now merging into NOL Universe) — this is where most Koreans actually hunt for the cheapest domestic fares, including last-minute discount tickets. Worth knowing: there’s no confirmed English interface — the app, website, and customer service all appear to be Korean-only, so this option makes more sense if you’re comfortable navigating a Korean-language site or traveling with someone who is
• Trip.com — a more foreign-traveler-friendly option, with a fully English interface and reliable international card support, making it an easier choice if you’d rather not navigate a Korean-only booking flow
• Aggregators like Skyscanner or Naver’s flight search to compare prices across carriers in one search
• Klook or KKday if you’d rather book alongside other travel arrangements in English

Prices swing a lot with how far ahead you book and which budget carrier has a seat sale running — it’s worth comparing rather than booking the first result. One quirk worth knowing: domestic tickets in Korea don’t come with a traditional e-ticket. You check in either through the airline’s own site/app up to 24 hours ahead, or at an airport kiosk on the day — regardless of which platform you booked through.

Other Domestic Routes

Gimpo also connects to Busan (Gimhae), Daegu, Gwangju, and a few other cities, but for most of these, KTX is usually just as fast door-to-door once you account for airport time, and considerably simpler. Flying makes more sense than the train mainly when Jeju is involved, or when your schedule is tight enough that shaving off transit time matters more than cost.

Incheon to Gimpo: If You’re Connecting

If you’re arriving internationally at Incheon (ICN) and connecting to a domestic flight from Gimpo (GMP) — a common move for reaching Jeju without going into Seoul first — you have a few ways to get between the two airports:

• Taxi: roughly 15–20 minutes between the two airports
• AREX + shuttle: takes longer but costs less than a taxi
• Airline-arranged transfer: some carriers offer a connecting transfer service between ICN and GMP for passengers booked on both legs — worth asking about when you book if your itinerary includes both

Build in real buffer time for this connection. It’s short on paper, but immigration, baggage claim, and getting between terminals all eat into it.

What to Expect at the Airport

Domestic flights in Korea are refreshingly low-stress compared to international travel:

• Arrive 40–60 minutes before departure — domestic check-in and security move quickly, and there’s no need for the 2–3 hour buffer international flights require
• Bring your passport as ID, even though it’s a domestic flight — Korean citizens use their national ID, but foreign travelers should have their passport ready
• Gimpo’s domestic terminal is separate from its (smaller) international terminal, which mainly serves a handful of short-haul international routes — make sure you’re headed to the right one

Quick Tips

• Book Gimpo–Jeju a few days ahead if possible; last-minute fares can spike during peak season and holidays
• If your trip includes both an international arrival and a domestic Jeju leg, check whether your airline offers a through-transfer between ICN and GMP before arranging your own transport
• For everywhere except Jeju, compare the total door-to-door time against KTX before assuming flying is faster
